Experience Counts

James has worked as a therapist for over 40 years. He has the required academic training to be a Registered Psychotherapist.

Professional Standing

He is also a former Registered Marriage and Family Therapist, a designation which has been subsumed into Registered Psychotherapist.

Advanced Clinical Training

A Registered Marriage and Family Therapist required a two year supervised internship after an academic degree. James undertook two additional one year internships.

A psychotherapist is a health professional with specific academic and practical training in helping people understand and change psychological and relational problems. This profession is regulated by The Government of Ontario. To be called a psychotherapist one must be registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists in Ontario.
A psychologist is a person with an academic degree, usually at the PhD level, through which they have demonstrated an ability to do academic research. They usually receive specific training in the administration and interpretation of psychological tests. They may also have some additional training in helping people with psychological and relational problems. Many but not all psychotherapists have more extensive training in those areas.
A counsellor is someone who gives practical guidance in concrete situational problems. They do not aim to change psychological or relational problems. A therapist focuses on psychological and relational problems. Some may also sometimes provide counselling.
At Chestnut Counselling costs is based on a sliding scale according to gross income. The maximum fee is $200/hour with a minimum fee of $150/hour.
Most extended health benefits plans will cover all or part of services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist.  Fees are not covered by OHIP.
